Remember when Instagram stories became a thing? That was controversial. It was so similar to Snapchat after all! Some other new features did disrupt the way we shop online.
We are in for a treat! Instagram announced a lot of new features coming in 2020. Some we know already. Like Facebook shop. Some are still in testing.
Here is our round up of all 9 exciting features coming to Instagram! They will change how we shop online for sure.
Those Instagram features will even change how we use the app. And give creators new opportunities to monetize their content.
Instagram feature #1 – Facebook Shop
Nothing new here. We knew it was coming. Yet, it is still a big move. Social media to e-commerce no less.
The new features allow businesses to build an online store. On Facebook and Instagram.
Thus, it is easier to tag products on posts. Or even during Instagram lives. Which can really help increase conversion rates!
The Facebook shop is like a brand catalog. User can shop without even leaving Instagram. Browse, save, share and purchase.
Brands can set up their own online storefront. Customers no longer need to click the link in bio. They get to your website much faster.
Best thing yet? Each shop is customizable! Thus, each brand can build a product catalog on their own term. Especially as Facebook is partnering with major e-commerce platforms.
Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Channel Advisor, CedCommerce, Cafe24, Tienda, Nub and Feedonomics.
At the moment, a lot of Instagram marketing can be done through third-party apps. Scheduling or analytics for example.
Thus, businesses can also use third-party apps to manage their Facebook shop. This will work for social media ads related to those shops too.
Facebook shop is a new Instagram feature that is already available. You can set up right now! See below for an idea of what it looks like!
Instagram feature #2 – Instagram Shop
Instagram Shop is a different feature. Not to be mixed up with Facebook shop. It offers a complete new shopping experience to users.
Look at the explore feed. You can see a “shop” tab now. This Instagram feature is still in its infancy.
Indeed, you will soon be able to browse selections from your favorite brands. And creators. You’ll be able to filter by categories too.
See an outfit you love? You can now purchase the whole look all in one place.
One thing Instagram has been focusing on is relevant. In terms of content each user see. We can assume the shop will do so as well.
The shopping experience will indeed be tailored to each user. They’ll be able to filter products. And get more relevant suggestions.
Different factors impact images and videos on the explore page. Yet, we can assume that brand using Instagram shopping will be featured more often.
Instagram checkout is available in the US. It pushes the Instagram shopping experience further. Users can place purchases on the app.
They don’t even need to go on any website anymore. Information, sizing, shipping, payment, all on Instagram.
Instagram feature #3 – Badges on Instagram live
Ever heard of badges? There are an interesting new Instagram feature. Badges create a new stream of revenue for content creators,
Remember Youtube membership? It is sort of similar. Subscribers pay a monthly fee to purchase public badges. They also get access to creator perks offered by the channel.
The difference? Badges are based on tipping. Followers can tip a creator during a live stream. They basically buy a badge during a Live video.
The badge will stand out in the comments. It also unlocks additional features, including placement on a creator’s list of badge holders.
Badges depends on the number of hearts a user has bought. Creators can see that too. One heart costs $0.99. Two cost $1.99. Three cost $4.99.
Users can only buy badges during an Instagram live.
Instagram feature #4 – IGTV Ads
IGTV is not new. It’s been around for a few years. You can use the built-in feature. Or utilize the dedicated app.
Creators can now use IGTV to monetize their content. Yes, they can indeed place ads on their videos. Until now, brands were able to place ads on stories.
With IGTV ads, brands can broadcast 15 seconds video ads on selected videos. Creators will be paid to host those ads.
Youtubers monetize videos in a similar way.
Until now, creators were not able to make money from IGTV. This new feature is limited to the US. Yet, it will expand globally soon.
The share of all advertising’s industry standard is 55%. Youtube follows that rate. And so will IGTV ads.
Instagram feature #5 – Live Shopping
Did you know? Instagram live views increased by 70% during the COVID-19 pandemic. Creators used the feature more, sure. Users also watched Instagram lives much more too.
Instagram saw an opportunity. People spend more time watching videos? Then, give them the opportunity to buy while doing so.
It makes sense that the social network extended Instagram shopping capabilities to Live videos.
This new feature is especially useful for small businesses. It is a cost-free way to showcase products on Instagram.
Sellers, brands and creators can tag products from their Facebook shop before they go live. The products will show at the bottom of the video.
Then, people just have to tap and purchase. Easy.

It basically looks like movie editing. Brand on Instagram can also leverage this new feature for funny mood-lifting videos. Especially during the pandemic.
Instagram feature #7 – AR filters
Up until now, the AR filters only worked while filming a video. You had to create content from scratch using the feature.
A bit of an Instagram flaw if you want my opinion. Thankfully, this new feature coming to Instagram in 2020 is changing the game.
You will be able to use the AR filter at any time. Pick a photo in your camera roll. Use an old video. The filters will work on both.
Upload any content to your Instagram Stories. Add the filter as you edit. Quick and easy.
Not all AR filters will have that option though. Facebook is working on it though. They are introducing new capabilities to the app.
Creators will be able to build AR effects that augment photos and videos taking outside of the Instagram app.

Self-care tips, organization tips, ways to calm anxiety, how to work from home, etc. Instagram guides are basically collections of related Instagram posts.
Many of those new Instagram features are already live. Brands, organizations and creators already use them.
